Past Community Services

2009

  • Participated in the March for Babies in April 2009 and raised $1,335 for infant mortality research via the March of Dimes
  • Launched our first “Girls Booked on Beauty Shops” reading nook at a local area beauty salon to help bridge the literacy gap among children of color
  • Continued its support of Turning Point, a shelter for battered and abused women and children. The chapter fulfilled a great need by donating ethnic health and beauty products to be used by people of color during their stay at the shelter. Our members also assisted Turning Point with several bulk mailings to gain funding.

2008

  • In September 2008, the Lehigh Valley Chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc. sponsored a room at Turning Point, a local area shelter for battered and abused women and children.
    • We started by choosing what we deemed “the worst” room in the shelter. In order to refresh that room, we painted it, provided new blinds and carpeting, new bedding, hanging rack for clothing, window treatments, a dresser and artwork for the walls. Sponsoring this room was the most rewarding experience and a labor of love. The chapter’s name is posted on a plaque on the door. The chapter will maintain the room as repairs are needed in subsequent years.
  • In addition to sponsoring the room, members noticed a need for ethnic health and beauty products to be used by mothers of color who seek refuge at the shelter. Therefore, the chapter donated ethnic hair and skin care products
  • We also assisted Turning Point throughout the year with bulk mailings to gain funding and distribute information
  • In April of 2008, the chapter raised research funds for the March of Dimes by participating, for the first time, in the March for Babies

2007

  • Members donated “Jared Boxes” to the Lehigh Valley hospital
  • New clothing items were donated to the Angel Network – benefiting needy kids in the area.
  • Non-perishable food items were donated to a local food bank
